Why are the access hours and procedures changing?

The purpose of the changes to building access hours and procedures is to improve functionality across campus and to align with other urban institution best practices for safety and access. This change also allows more manageable business hours campuswide, and is in accordance with University Policy 719: Access Control.

What is “open access”?

Open access means the building doors are unlocked and anyone can access the building.

What is “49er ID access”?

49er ID access means the building is locked, but anyone with a valid 49er ID can swipe their ID at the card reader and enter the building.

What is “restricted access”?

Restricted access means the building is locked and only those with identified access to that building may use their 49er ID to swipe into the building.

What is the difference between break periods and holiday periods?

Break periods are scheduled times during the year where the University remains open, but there’s a reduced population on campus. (e.g. Fall Break, Spring Break, days between spring commencement and summer semesters, etc.) Access hours and procedures may be modified during this time, as outlined above.

Holiday periods are days in which the University is closed. (e.g. July 4, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.) All buildings will operate on restricted access during holiday days/periods.

My building isn’t listed above, what are my building’s hours?

Buildings not listed are either 24/7 restricted 49er ID access or the schedule is actively managed by units responsible for the building. In both cases, the building access hours will not change.

Where are the building hours located?

Impacted buildings will have a sticker with a QR code near the main entrance’s swipe access device. Scan the code to get to this website to view the hours and access protocols. Note: Some buildings may have multiple entrances with swipe access capabilities. You should familiarize yourself with the swipe-access entries of buildings you frequent.
