What is Safety & Security?
Safety & Security, a division of Business Affairs, is the umbrella organization that provides general, administrative, and fiscal oversight to the three departments listed herein:
Police and Public Safety
UNC Charlotte Police & Public Safety is a fully authorized state police agency, providing both police and security services to a campus of 28,000 students, faculty and staff. The Department is comprised of two divisions–Patrol and Support Services–with a special emphasis on community oriented policing. The UNC Charlotte Police Department collaborates regularly with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Force and other regional law enforcement agencies.
Environmental Health and Safety
The Office of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) is dedicated to the reduction of risks within the UNC Charlotte community, and to the promotion of safety as a value in our university culture. We provide environmental, health, and safety services to everyone at UNC Charlotte. Our goal is to support the mission of the university by helping staff, faculty, students, and visitors take an active role in protecting their health and the environment.
Emergency Management
Emergency Management is a division of the UNC Charlotte Department of Police and Public Safety. Our primary responsibility is to help the campus community prepare for, respond to, and recover from any emergency that threatens the University.
Business Continuity and Emergency Management Planning
A subdivision of Emergency Management, Business Continuity Planning provides the structure to guide UNC Charlotte and its various stakeholders in preparing, preventing, mitigating, responding and recovering from a disruption to campus operations such as an emergency or disaster. The overall effort to integrate and cultivate continuity of operations and organizational resilience is the function of Business Continuity Planning.
Threat Assessment and Management
The Office of Threat Assessment and Management promotes a safe and secure campus environment for all members of the University community by providing effective threat assessment processes, coordination of case management and education to the University community. The goal is to reduce risk factors for committing violent behaviors and to enable the person to remain positively engaged in the academic or work environment.
Demonstration Activity Resource team
Freedom of speech is central to UNC Charlotte’s academic mission, and the University encourages and supports open, vigorous, and civil debate by the University community across the full spectrum of society’s issues. However, to ensure the University can effectively fulfill its role as North Carolina’s urban research university, it may impose reasonable limitations on certain campus activities. The Demonstration Activity Resource Team (DART) is available as a resource to provide guidance and policy direction to comply with University policy relating to free speech. Please review this information to help understand how we can partner to maintain a safe and productive environment.
